Sesotho (Southern Sotho) is one of the official languages of South Africa, and is the primary official language of Lesotho, where it is widely spoken. In South Africa, there are 3,555,186 (7.93 %) first language speakers [2001 census data].

Sesotho is another of South Africa's three Sotho languages, spoken by 7.6% of the country's population, or 3.8-million people.

It is the language of the Free State, which borders the kingdom of Lesotho, a country entirely surrounded by South African territory. Sesotho is spoken by 62.6% of the Free State population, with almost half of all Sesotho-speaking South Africans living there.
