Language portal

From OmegaWiki
Jump to: navigation, search

OmegaWiki aims to be a resource for all languages. We concentrate at the languages that are or will be recognised in the ISO 639 standard. Three versions have been ratified so far, the ISO 639-4 will describe how linguistic entities can be indicated by combining information of other standards, the ISO 639-6 will recognise other linguistic entities like language families and dialects.

Nobody will be able to know all languages, this is why we expect that communities may arise for specific languages. To provide them with a place of their own, we have created portals for many languages. People are invited to make them their own.

Because of this anticipation, we ask everyone to enter Babel information on their user page. In each Babel block, the language code will lead you to the Portal page for that language. To start off with, the portals have been populated with the 6 Babel codes.. The first recognition of a language is in a proper text in each box.

Content of a Portal[edit]

What a portal will look like, will be different for each language. The things I would expect are resources for the language. These can be standards institutes for a language ...

Swadesh[edit]

For a language to be recognised as being vibrant on OmegaWiki, we need proper babel boxes, a minimal portal, people who work on its content. To appreciate this status, we want to have the "swadesh" list, which is a list of Expressions maintained in that language. When for instance horse gets translated to paard, the translations for all DefinedMeanings for paard have to be translated in English as well. The consequence is that the maintenance of the Swadesh list will be a continuing background job. It will likely be a good indicator of the vibrancy of a community.
